Thyra J. Edwards was more than a social worker; she was an internationalist, educator, and fearless advocate for justice, whose work and influence reached well beyond the borders of the United States. Edwards dedicated her life to confronting racism, economic inequality, fascism, and colonialism at a time when both her gender and race posed significant barriers to leadership.
Today, her legacy reminds us to think bigger, to see social work not just as local service, but as global action rooted in justice, courage, and collective responsibility.
Thyra J. Edwards believed social problems were interconnected globally. Social workers must think internationally; migration, climate justice, racial inequality, and poverty are global issues requiring cross-border collaboration. Her approach emphasised human rights, collective responsibility, and addressing social justice across cultures and nations.
She saw internationalism as an ethical responsibility in social work, grounded in the idea that social workers have moral and professional obligations that extend beyond our national borders. Because social issues are increasingly global, migration, climate change, war, poverty and human trafficking, ethical social work practice requires global awareness, global support and global action.
Thyra J. Edwards believed that oppression was interconnected across nations. Her activism reflected the idea that:
‘’Injustice anywhere threatens justice everywhere’’
She represented political courage in social work and a willingness to stand up for social justice, human rights, and ethical principles. Thyra J. Edwards was outspoken in opposition to fascism, colonialism, and inequality.
Social work is deeply connected to policy, power, and systems, and social workers should be willing to engage in policy advocacy and challenge unjust systems, and not remain neutral in the face of injustice.
